The Passionists Compassion

The Sea and Eternity

As a Lad the ocean was my love
But her waves troubled my heart
Baffling me with the thoughts of eternity
Even before I knew how to use the time.

The sea was always my friend
And she had always answered me before
Her moods and her waves of wisdom
Washing away my doubts and my darkness.

I asked her how to use myself and my time
for the things that are not passing
How can I make my life and person
reach into those things that are never ending?

In her faithful, yet unexpected way
my sea did not fail me.
In ways my mind did not grasp
A Presence gave the answer.

"Time does not contain me,
nor does eternity explain me.
But possess me in time
and you have experienced eternity.
"

So spoke the Lord by the sea
to a troubled lad of seventeen
by the taste of that Presence
that dissolved time and eternity.
